A GREETING FROM OUR COUNSELOR:
I AM ‘MISS DENISE’, the counselor at Discovery. In the younger grades, I bring my blue kindness bucket and my friends ‘Squawk’ and ‘Kelso’ to visit the classrooms with me to teach lessons around getting along with others, friendship and kindness. I also go in the older grade classrooms too, as well as work with individual kids and groups. I can often be seen in the lunchroom talking to students or helping with our Green Team Recycling Program.
At Discovery all the teachers use a curriculum titled ‘Second Step’. This program works with students on their ‘Social Emotional Learning’….. being good listeners, understanding emotions, and learning problem solving skills. All very important skills to learn in elementary school and beyond!
You can go also go to www.secondstep.org to find out more or see some sample lessons.
I love to work with families and kids. Please reach out to me with any concerns around: friendship conflicts, empathy, social skills or challenges at home. Or any other concerns.
